Assume there were reasonable restrictions on how much money the government could spend (like a balanced budget requirement and a debt ceiling that couldn’t be changed every day).  The 536 people we’ve sent to Washington wouldn’t have the money to wage a war.  They would have to make a decision on whether  to spend money on additional unemployment benefits or the $100 million it spends every four years to subsidize parties at the political conventions.

Taking away their credit card and making them accountable for how they spend our money will solve most of the problems we have.  It will force them to get out of Afghanistan.  It will force them to eliminate pork in the farm bill.  It will stop stupid things like spending $2.6 million to encourage Chinese prostitutes to drink more responsibly.

It’s not a Democratic or Republican problem.  It’s a POLITICIAN problem.  They are all guilty.  We need to stop falling into the trap of blaming one party or the other.  We need to put pressure on all of them to stop spending money we don’t have.  We need to elect people who will deal with this problem and get rid of the incumbents who continue to ignore financial reality.
