Who’s to blame for the Government Shutdown?
Our system of government only works when our elected representatives are willing to compromise. Both sides negotiate and make concessions to find the middle ground. In this case, the sides started pretty far apart. Republicans believe that Obamacare is the worst law ever passed by our government. Their starting point was the full repeal. Democrats believe that Obamacare is the salvation of the nation. Their starting point was “no negotiation”.
Since Democrats refused to discuss changes or modifications (although President Obama himself made some big changes), the Republicans in the House of Representatives had to attach the issue to a budget bill.
Republicans made the first move. Instead of full repeal they proposed to delay the law for one year. Democrats refused. Republicans compromised again by proposing a delay of the individual mandate for a year. Obama himself has delayed the employer mandate for a year. Democrats refused again to move from their “no negotiation” position.
You decide who tried to negotiate, who made concessions, who refused to compromise. You decide who’s to blame for the Government shutdown.
