A school bus service that missed pickups for dozens of Duval County elementary students Monday, leaving many in the rain at bus stops, faces a fine by the school district.
Meanwhile, officials with the bus company, Student Transportation America, wouldn’t answer questions Tuesday about whether their charter service to the Daytona 500 race disrupted school bus routes.
But many parents who contacted the Times-Union said they were told by bus drivers that a number of the routes missed Monday were due to a contract for shuttling service at Daytona Speedway.
The Daytona 500 was delayed into Monday due to rainy weather.
When asked if the delays and missed routes in Jacksonville were due to service the company was providing in Daytona, STA spokesman Keith Engelbert would only say, “We had a lot of charters and we have a lot of buses.”
Beyond parents, school bus drivers in the Jacksonville area have been buzzing about the incident. But schools officials would not say how many children were left stranded or even how many schools were affected.
Al Stewart, a bus driver for Durham Bus Service who works with many drivers at STA, said the Daytona contract disrupted the service.
