Concerned about inconsistent enforcement, the Duval County School Board wants to meet with principals and teachers as well as reach out to students and parents to find out what it can do to improve student discipline.
"The issue is actually, reality-wise, reducing misbehavior in our classrooms," board member Tommy Hazouri said. "... We probably have reduced it [misbehavior], but we haven't reduced it the way that we could."
Lack of discipline and the inconsistent enforcement of rules are routine complaints heard throughout the district, board members said.
"Suspensions or referrals, that's the biggest issue," Hazzouri said. "The consistency, sustainability of referrals all over, needs to be the same."
As early as next month, the board wants to hold roundtable discussions with principals and teachers to get feedback about the problems they've encountered enforcing discipline.
The board also will seek input from students and parents, board Chairwoman Betty Burney said during a Monday policy development workshop
