FDR created social security. He built the Tennessee-Tombigbee waterways, ending widespread flooding throughout the south and providing a hint of modernity with rural electrification. He built the dams that to are still serving country out west. He fought a great World War, turning loose our great industrial might. He gave the citizens of this country hope during its darkest hours. His "Fireside Chats" alone pulled this nation together towards a common goal.
I want good governance, not no governance. The least governed nations in the world are among the most corrupt and poorest. The most governed have the highest quality of living we know.
I want that for my kids, and I want an American version of that.
Look JL it was Truman who desegregated the military, but that was a problem how? That sounds kind of you know- ignorant.
How well were Americans living back then, most of the country had neither electricity or indoor plumbing. Women couldn't vote, blacks couldn't vote. You could get cocaine and heroin in your elixir at the local drugstore. Children were used as sources of cheap labor. Cities like Cleveland, Chicago, Pittsburgh had air that was unbreathable and you were more likely to die of typhus than old age.
Being poor meant when there was no money, there was no food, no heat and certainly no health care. An injury to the breadwinner meant families were broken up and sent asunder. The slaughterhouses were sources of widespread disease.
Monopolies controlled the economy and government. Not until Teddy and antitrust legislation were the bounds that held most Americans in a state of perpetual indenturedness loosened.
I am for hte working man. He is getting pressed from both sides, top and bottom.
Corporations won't see to it that he is provided an opportunity, which is all most want, to give their children a better life. Call me names like progressive. liberal, communist whatever, but until YOU let go of your government supplied healthcare and monthly checks, your voice rings with hypocrisy. And That hypocrisy is all I can hear.
One more thing Amanda, look back prior to 1928 look what happened prior, Progressive Democrat that created the IRS, The Federal Reserve, he segregated the military, federal government, imposed many regulations and mandates. Look back at what FDR proposed, he almost literally destroy our country with more Progressive Democrat big government controls and hand outs.
What works? A small limited government, states having their own sovereignty over social issues, schools etc, all left to the local governments, not a big federal government dictating social issues, etc., Communities solve social issues, Free Enterprise, Capitalism, that is what made our country so great, the PEOPLE, not the GOVERNMENT. I can not really answer your questions without addressing all that I did because of what is happening, the spending the massive size government, unions trying to control jobs in America, it is a mess with so many people trying to control and dictate to the American, period. We are on the very verge of loosing our Liberty and Freedoms, Government is NOT answer, neither is more spending, they are the problem and they have created this horrific mess. We need to get them out of the way period and get back to the foundation of our Founding Fathers, who knew through history, what worked and what failed. Man has always strived for Liberty and Freedom, that is where they can be most productive and happy, period. I do not expect you to see eye to eye with me nor do i expect you to change your views, because you have been very clear where you are coming from, these are my thoughts.
Amanda, if you take the time and actually look around to what really is going on, perhaps then you could see a lot clearer. Just this past July over 600 plus new regulations, mandates and fees were put into place by the Federal Government. The disparity from income has come about because of the Federal Government, EPA, DOE, and many other Federal Departments that can actually make up their own regulations, mandates, fees without even going through Congress. Many middle income jobs have been lost because of this happening. And it had greatly excellerated since Jan 2007 when we started having crisis after crisis. This has been planned by the Progressive Democrats to basically destroy the middle class, period. They want a big government, they want masses of people depended on big government, period. They want to usher in complete socialism and then the pathway to Marxism is built. There is NO 99%, that is another lie, go read what i have posted below. You are stating just what people who are Progressive Democrats, like Trumka, Ayers, Van Jones, Stephen Lerner, Rathke, etc., the top wage earners are paying most of the taxes. There has been report after report published by top economist, showing that if you even TOOK 75% of their income, it would not even put a dent in our debt, that is a complete lie coming from the far left. They are trying to created wealth envy to topple our government period.

JL,
Income disparity does matter, that last time in our natins history that it was this great was 1928, and we all know what that brought about.
It is more than just making good investments, it is the rules being bent towards the one percent.
Did you notice that the exact amount that the bottom 99% went down is what hte 0ne percent went up.
Look if a person has their own money on the line , no problem. But if a CEO is collecting 20 million and has no skin in the gane, then that isn't capitalism that is cronism.
Taxes should be structured in a way to reward the guy who creates jobs, we need a thriving middle-class moreso than we need 400 people whose total worth is greater than the bottom 150 million Americans. This isn't the way it always was, this has just happened in the last thirty years. This isn't how it always was, it is how it has become. When America has thrived, this isn't how it looked. When America thrived, the middle class was thriving.
But JL what of the questions I posed, what do you say to them?
It is also interesting to note that wealth of Congressional members have shot up greatly in 2010, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi's wealth shot up over 62% in one year, should we go after her too?

If you're not already aware. This is what's going on in DC while dangerous criminals are allowed back out on the streets. It's horrifying that this is happening to our citizens and veterans for protesting the hijacking of our election process. This is still happening! They are STILL being tortured and treated like full on terrorists.
You may not be aware of the typical things they're forced to go through...…
